C2i got going in 2002, taking a lease on the Water Witch (Lancaster). In 2003, the Sun was acquired: the following year, Sante (Lancaster) — now Bar Eleven — joined the fold, but this only lasted a year. The lease on the Water Witch was sold to Mitchells in 2006. The Duke of Edinburgh opened as a C2i hotel in 2007, the Palatine in 2008 and the Mill in 2009.

Lancaster started brewing in July 2005 with a 12 barrel brewplant previously at Otter Brewery. Most micro-breweries are begun by brewers going into business, but this one was started by three businessmen going into brewing: Mike Smith of the wholesalers MWS, who provided the premises, Keith Bott of Titanic Brewery who provided the expertise and Matt Jackson of C2i, who provided outlets.
